The Myth of Easy, Feel-Good Self-Care

May 04, 2023

We know that we're supposed to sleep more, eat better, and get more exercise. We tell ourselves that it should be easy --  and then beat ourselves up for not taking better care of ourselves. This week, my guest and I talk about why self-care can feel so hard and what actually makes real self-care doable.

My guest this week is Darci Hawxhurst, a health and burnout coach who was a single mom for years, working to rehabilitate her daughter's brain injury when suddenly one night she felt her own adrenals pop. She'd spent years working with holistic integrative health care, evolutionary nutrition, applied kinesiology, and brain science, to help her daughter. Then she found she needed to use the tools on herself to overcome her own burnout.

Join us on this episode as Darci shares her insights on what self-care is and what she finds most helpful to address the physical symptoms that can come with burnout.

What You'll Learn from this Episode:

  • The three pillars of physical self-care are, and the one thing that creates the foundation for all self-care.
  • How resistance to taking care of ourselves shows up.
  • What to do about the judgment from ourselves and others about our own self-care.
  • How to ignore the pressure of getting self-care right.
  • Why your self-care routine may look different everyday.
  • How to create hits of dopamine as self-care.

For Women Lawyers Who Swear They’re “Just Tired”

(But Secretly Wonder If It’s More)

If you’re a woman in law, you’ve probably convinced yourself that being exhausted is just part of the job description. You’re not burned out — you’re just “busy,” right? (Sure. And I’m the Queen of England.)

Download my free guide, “7 Reasons You’re Not Burned Out and Are Totally Fine, You Swear,” and let’s call out the stories we tell ourselves to avoid facing what’s really going on.
